The Bob Dannenbrink "Open Loads" Contest

Many LSR members remember Bob Dannenbrink's excellent clinics on open loads

Originally titled "Loads In - Empties Out", Bob gave the clinic at San Jac meetings, LSR conventions and at the Greater Houston Train Show several times. He grew embarrassed to present it so many times, but is was literally "back by popular demand". Modelers loved it!

Bob's wife Joyce donated a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Bob's equipment to the San Jacinto Model Railroad Club. What more fitting way to use the funds than to hold a contest in his honor featuring a type of modeling that he championed for so many years?

So go to your layout (or storage closet) and get to work! The rules are simple:
  • Open Loads contestants must be registered for the convention OR members of the San Jacinto Model Railroad Club.
  • The Open Loads Contest is sponsored by the San Jacinto Model Railroad Club in honor of Bob Dannenbrink. The contest is not part of the convention's NMRA contest, but is held in conjunction with it.The open load needs to be built by you or at least installed on a railroad car (as in a model of a tank, truck, earthmover, etc.) you built or bought to place in or on a flatcar, gondola, hopper, COFC well car or other appropriate car designed to carry an open load.
  • Limit of two cars entered per contestant. You may bring additional open load cars for display only, if space is available.
  • The Open Loads Contest is judged by popular vote. Contest ballots will be included in the LSR convention registration packets.
  • Prizes will be awarded by San Jacinto Model Railroad Club: First Place, $100; Second Place $50; and Third Place $25.00. Winners will be announced when the LSR/NMRA contest winners are announced.
  • Contest entries will be accepted Thursday evening (Feb. 13) from 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and Friday morning (Feb. 14) from 8:15 a.m. to noon.
